The Legendary Chincoteague Nightmist

As a direct descendant of Misty of Chincoteague, Nightmist was a legendary Chincoteague, following in a line of famous Chincoteagues, and he is the direct ancestor of many of our Chincoteague ponies.

Nightmist returned to Chincoteague often for the annual Eastern Shore pony swim where he was a celebrated "celebrity!"  His hoof prints are set in the sidewalk next to Misty’s outside the Island Roxy Theatre.

During his lifetime, Nightmist was trained by the famous horse trainer Tommie Turvey - trainer of star horses - where Nightmist learned tricks from the renowned trick rider!  For those of you who are not familiar with Tommie, he is a life-long horseman and stuntman.  Tommie trains and supplies horses for stunts in feature films, commercials, and live shows.  Nightmist was loved by all: young and old!  Every year in Chincoteague Nightmist would perform for the children who loved and cheered for him.  In addition, Nightmist was loved by the elderly and would visit senior centers frequently.

Unfortunately, Nightmist died unexpectedly Thursday, May 14 2009, at the age of 11.

“Nightmist just sat down and died, same way as his mother,” Mr. Pryor said of Windy, who died after giving birth to Nightmist on July 9, 1998.

Although Nightmist has left this world his legacy still remains.  Our Chincoteague ponies, and those of our affiliated farm, Serendipity Horse Meadows Farm, are direct descendants of Nightmist and his famous ancestors.

Not only will Nightmist's legacy continue through our Chincoteague ponies, but it will also continue on the big screen. A Lifetime and Hallmark movie about Nightmist will tell his story.  A 30-minute preview of the two-hour movie, Nightmist, premiered on March 9, 2019. See the news story here:
